NRC Prioritizes Low Level Nuclear Waste Management Strategies

The upcomming closure to most of the country of the Barnwell, South Carolina LLW Disposal Facility is posing challenges to hospitals, universities and other producers of LLW. Barnwell currently is the only accpetor of LLW in the US. The NRC has published the results of it's strategic assessment of LLW which prioritizes future activities to manage the LLW. Over the next 2 years the NRC will be devloping and implementing guidance documents and procedures on extended storage, encapsulation, alternate disposal and import/export of LLW.
