
Wednesday, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit northern Chile. There are reports that 2 deaths were caused by the quake as wells as about 65 injuries, many damaged buildings, interruption of electricity and road blockages. According to the USGS, the earthquake resulted from the release of stresses generated by the subduction of the oceanic Nazca plate beneath the South American plate.

4,000 structures damaged
1,200 buildings were completely demolished
8 aftershocks, magnitude 4.6 - 6.0 on Saturday
2 aftershocks, magnitude 5.5 - 5.6 on Sunday
