UK Gets Tough on Landfill Waste
A landfill directive in the UK goes into effect next week requiring all commercial waste to be pretreated before being accepted into landfills. Pretreatment options include some form of physical, thermal, chemical, or biological process. For instance, partial recycling of waste would be accepted as a physical treatment which reduces the overall volume of the waste.
The purpose of the directive is to reduce the total amount of waste entering UK landfills which have limited remaining space and eliminate liquid waste to reduce landfill leachate.
