This laser range finder annouced by Laser Technology Inc. has an accuracy of ±1 foot which would be good for GIS mapping and test boring layout applications. The TruPulse 200 measures height and distance and is available for $699. They promise the Tru Pulse 360 to appear this summer which will also include a compass for azimuth measurement. Both units use reflectorless measurements for one person operation and can be sync to a laptop or palmtop for data recording. These units should prove more accurate than hand held GPS and way cheaper than a survey grade GPS set up.
